The Peanut Butter Baby (Post #3: Choice)

Recently, there has been an Internet meme going around called the "Peanut Butter Baby". It shows a baby literally covered from head to toe in peanut butter sitting on a table when the person filming the video asks, "Does that feel good?" and the child replies with, "Ah." Honestly, the original Peanut Butter Baby video really, really creeps me out because the baby looks so gross. However, I came across a Twitter account that makes remixes of songs using the audio from the aforementioned video where the kid says' "Ah,"and I could not help but laugh every time I watched a new one. Actually, I found them so funny that I followed the account, so I can see a new one every day. This Twitter account can be an example of how media can distort the original message of something, even babies covered in peanut butter.

The article I analyzed is one of the most recent in the tumultuous sea of editorials and opinions arguing about gun control. This comes in the light of the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, California. The title of this article is literally, "Look at what you've done, Wayne LaPierre," who is the president of the National Rifle Association, so just from that we can already see what side of the argument the author is on. However, the author criticizes President Obama as well as the GOP for their so called "solutions" to end the violence. Obama pretty much said he would end domestic terrorism by targeting the Islamic State in Syria, while the GOP claimed they were considering investing more money into mental health programs. The author makes a valid point when saying that both of these ideas are fine and dandy, but how does that help with gun control?

In regards to these "solutions", I think there is a bit of doublespeak in action, not in the sense that we are being lied to, but our attention is being diverted from the main issue. I think the pressure on gun control laws is building up more and more as these mass shootings keep occurring, and the answer is staring us straight in the eye, yet no effective solution has been enacted. Both President Obama and the GOP are putting a Band-Aid on the situation by directing our attention to ISIS and mental health within the U.S. because the shooters in San Bernardino showed no signs of affiliation with the Islamic State nor any symptoms of mental disorder. Simply by outlining a plan for the war on non-domestic terrorism and promising to consider aid for mental health programs, these politicians are trying to satisfy the public's thirst for a clear-cut solution to gun violence by talking about other issues plaguing the nation, and the world.

My Relationship With Media at This Moment (Post #1)

I use media on a daily basis, and probably at an unhealthy amount. I am a teenager, so of course I am always watching television, scrolling away at my cell phone screen, or listening to music. All of these things have some kind of effect on how I view things in the real world, and it can either be temporary or long-lasting. For example, I think my cell phone has a consequential effect on my work habits as a student because I have made it almost a routine to tell myself, "You can get on Twitter for 10 minutes after you finish this worksheet," or, "You can check everyone's Snapchat stories after reading these couple pages". At times, I drop whatever I am doing just to answer a person's text about how their cat is cute or something trivial like that. Not only does media affect how productive I am, but it also can affect my mood. Sometimes watching a movie or even listening to a song can invoke certain emotions, for better or for worse. I remember when I watched The Great Gatsby, I got so angry towards the end when Gatsby was murdered that I made up an alternate ending where he lives and marries Daisy. The point is, media plays a large role in my life on a day-to-day basis.
